Let me explain. Say you exclaim 'don't you dare' to someone, sounds pretty normal, right? But then, when you bear in mind that 'don't' is a contraction of the words 'do not' so technically, you are saying.....
DO NOT YOU DARE!
This is the same for 'can't' in some circumstances, like 'why can't you pick up the book today?' which is, of course, 'why can not you pick up the book today?'
In conclusion, the english language is weird. I forgot to thank you guys before, but thank you for 10 followers! I know it sounds small but it means a lot to me. Anyway, I hope you are having a great day.
Do you think the english language is weird? What's the weirdest word/contraction that you've come across?
rose :3
Ah! I never noticed that before. That is hilarious though. I might just randomly go around saying,
ReplyDelete"DO NOT YOU DARE!"
It would hilarious! To see people's faces. The English language is so weird. I mean, how many sounds can the letter "a" make? It's absurd. "Y" is sometimes a vowel? WHAT EVEN PEOPLE?! Not to mention there are a bazillion and one comma rules and twice as many exceptions to presumed rules. Why do we bother? Let's just all use sign language. Translation: Let us just all use sign language. :P
PS- I tagged you for the Dragon Loyalty Award tag thing.
DeleteThanks for the tag! I will definitely do it. now you say it, sign language will be infinitely better than speaking!

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Just saw this comment abd its awesome!! If I knew sign language I'd definetly use it!!
DeleteThis is so true! I haven't actually noticed these things before, and yes, the English language is pretty strange, and confusing. Other countries that learn English must find English difficult because of all the rules, grammar and blah blah blah. I like this post >.<
ReplyDelete-Elsa :)
Thanks! Other people in other countries definitely must be like 'what?' half the time!

As a Spanish speaker I love the english language! You have some really cool words and way of saying things in one word that tend to translate in fifty spanish words so yeah, love it! :P
ReplyDeleteWow! Fifty Spanish words for one English word! That's amazing! The english language is pretty cool, so is Spanish!
DeleteOmg heck YES the english language is weird. None of the rules are consistent and the grammar is confusing and words have like a zillion different meanings and aHHHH YEP. I can only agree with you. XD
